The Citadel

Our first real "field trip" was a (guided) exploration of Amman, including the citadel and the amphitheatre.

This is the Temple of Hercules, and it's completely freaking badass.

The Umayyad mosque, built right next door, was pretty cool too.

I wanted to see the view from the top of this walled-in courtyard beside the mosque, and I had a specific plan in mind for getting there. Arie and Matt thought this might be a very bad idea and suggested that I not do it.

Strangely enough, this only made me more intent on my goal...

I made it nearly to the top, then lost my footing and fell eight feet. Lesson learned? I think not.

Epic ruins call for epic poses!

We met a Saudi Arabian translator named Abraham who was visiting the citadel with his father. He rather enjoyed being in our pictures. At one point, he took off his father's smaagh and put it on Burt, then took Burt's little bucket hat and plopped it right on dad's noggin. The old man said something in a colloquial dialect that I didn't understand and laughed.

"My father says he feels like cowboy."

Woman, the internet will not eat your identity just because you mark yourself as "Mom".

In other news, we're spending three days in the desert this weekend with camels and Bedouins and lots of rocks to climb. And another castle. WIN!
